Requirements for travelling to Belize with pets

A journey to Belize with a pet is possible under certain conditions. Several requirements apply to prevent the spread of infectious diseases among animals in the country.

If you want to visit Belize with your pet, consider the following requirements:

· First, you should obtain an import permit from the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA). Fill in and send your application to one of the BAHA offices. You can email your application to animalhealth@baha.org.bz or connect with the Animal Health Department by phone at (501) 824-4872. Please note, that the permit must be valid at the time of travel;

· The importation of cats and dogs also requires a valid veterinary certificate. It must be completed and signed by an authorized veterinarian in your country within 2 weeks before the journey. The certificate states that the pet is completely healthy, has no signs of infectious diseases and ectoparasites, and has all the necessary vaccinations;

· All pets entering Belize must be vaccinated against rabies. The health certificate must include information about the date of vaccination and the name of the vaccine manufacturer;

· If you travel with a dog, it must also be vaccinated against Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, and Parvovirus;

· All cats must be vaccinated against Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia;

· Your pet must be treated against endoparasites within 30 days before the journey;

· You have to inform BAHA of the date, time, and number of your flight 2 days before your departure;

· Transport your pet in a new or cleaned and disinfected cage that complies with IATA regulations.

Pet quarantine information

All pets must be inspected at the point of entry upon arrival in Belize. You will have to provide all the pet’s documentation to a BAHA officer. Pets from countries affected by diseases or pests must also undergo an examination by a BAHA veterinarian. If your pet needs the examination, you will be informed when your import permit is sent. When the quarantine is needed, the pet owner is responsible for all additional expenses.

Do not forget to familiarize yourself with the pet transportation requirements of the airline that you choose. You can find further information on our website, in the “Airlines Pet Policy” section.
