Holiday with your dog in Budapest

For some, it's the scenic Danube River that separates the city in two. For others, it's Turkish baths, thermal baths and various springs that count more than a hundred in the Hungarian capital. Someone also stands for Hungarian architecture: old-time quarters in baroque style, magnificent theaters and palaces, or old walls with which the city started... Because from old buildings blows with romantic atmosphere of the past.

We would suggest you to feel the unique inner world of Budapest and explore it with your four-legged friend. To make your trip interesting, we have prepared a few tips for dog-friendly attractions for you.

Capital of Hungary with a dog: tips for places worth seeing

First and foremost, we recommend you to start exploring the Hungarian capital with Buda district and Budapest Castle. A large number of historical monuments and museums are concentrated in this place. Among them, the Royal Palace, the Matthias Church, the Palais Sándor and the ruins of a medieval castle are particularly worth seeing.

The architecture of these buildings is fascinating. In Budapest you can take interesting photos as a souvenir.

Not far from these sights is the Fisherman's Bastion - the square on Castle Hill, surrounded by a gallery with seven towers, symbolizing seven Magyar peoples who settled in the IX. Century settled along the banks of the Danube and founded the Hungarian state. The bastion is built on the site of the old fishermen's market and is named in honor of the fishermen's guild that defended this part of the city for centuries.

After the bastion, our way leads to the Hungarian Parliament. It is not for nothing that his photos are always on the first pages of advertising brochures and travel guides about Budapest. This is a huge residence of European rulers that has almost 700 rooms and 29 staircases. Neo-Gothic and eclectic style are harmoniously intertwined in the building architecture.

It is highly recommended to come to the Parliament in the evening to see the beautifully lit building reflected in the Danube waters.

If you want to further enjoy the wonderful combination of different architectural styles, take a slow stroll down Andrássy út. This is one of the most beautiful streets in Budapest, stretching from Elizabeth Square to Városliget City Park. Here are old villas and townhouses, as well as numerous museums, theaters and restaurants. Stroll along this boulevard with your four-legged friend under shady trees, feel the historical atmosphere and stop by one of the picture-rich restaurants.

Andrássy út ends with Heroes' Square, where you can see the gigantic Millennium Monument with a figure of Archangel Gabriel at the top. At the foot of the column are the equestrian statues of Magyar commanders.

The Városliget Park, which was created for the thousand-year anniversary of Hungary, also starts from Heroes' Square. In ancient times, this territory was full of swamps, but by order of Empress Maria Theresa, the bog was completely drained, a canal system was laid, and trees were planted. Now the town park is a popular local recreation area where you can walk your dog and relax from the city hustle and bustle.

In the center of Városliget is the fascinating Vajdahunyad Castle. The first impression is as if it was built in the Middle Ages and used for defense purposes. But in truth it is a stylized building erected at the beginning of the last century. That is why the castle is well preserved to this day.

At the exit from the park you can see another interesting object worth seeing — the Time Wheel. The construction is a wheel made of granite, glass and stainless steel and is considered the largest hourglass in the world. The original idea was that the hourglass turns 180 degrees every year on December 31st, so the sector with sand goes up and the empty sector goes down. This moment is the beginning of a new era and an annual sanding cycle. But the maintenance of the hourglass turned out to be too expensive, so it was stopped.

For every Budapester, St. Stephen's Basilica is a household name and one of the most popular places to walk. The basilica was built in honor of Saint Stephen the First, King, who founded the Hungarian state. The construction is in the form of an equilateral cross. Two bell towers were added to the main building from both sides. In one of them is the Stephansglocke - a huge bell weighing nine tons.

If you're used to walking your dog late at night to walk, be sure to go to the Danube. Budapest is beautiful at all times of the day, but the city looks especially fantastic at night. The Danube promenade is particularly magical. The most beautiful part is the Central Promenade with a lot of fragrant flowering rondeaus, sculptures, spectacular views of Budapest Castle and Gellért Hill. The night lighting also transforms the city panorama. Take a Danube river cruise to marvel at the romantic night city. Along the promenade you will see many berths for ships that serve as public transport here.

The Hungarian capital is also known for its bridges. The most famous and historically valuable of these is the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, which connected Buda and Pest in 1873 and thus founded the unified city of Budapest. We recommend that you walk all the way through this suspension bridge. This takes about fifteen minutes. During your walk you will see many sights of Budapest from both sides of the Danube and you can take fantastic photos.

One can escape from the busy streets of the capital to Margaret Island, to which the Árpád Bridge leads. This green oasis contains everything you need for active recreation - from jogging trails to sports fields. There is also a "dancing" fountain that works 24 hours a day and lights up with all colors in the evening.

In addition to the man-made monuments, there are also natural sights in the city, such as Gellért Hill. This mountain is located on the banks of the Danube and is visible from afar. Panoramic views of the streets, districts, Danube valley and bridges open from there. You can also find interesting sights on Gellért Hill, such as the 19th-century Habsburg citadel. Century, which is lined with cafes and souvenir shops. If you go down in the direction of the Buda Fortress, you will see the monument to Saint Gellért. At the top of the mountain stands the 14 meter high Statue of Liberty with a figure of a woman with a palm branch. At one of the descents there is a cave temple in honor of a faith healer who lived as a hermit.
